I'm supposed to be making ceramic dishes and pencil holders this weekend, you know, serious stuff. And they need to be finished by late next week. But I'm distracted by a bloomin' Babytoes, the first of spring 2016!

Babytoes Blooms in 2016, MRobb |
There it sits, right in the window of my studio, distracting me with its cheerful beauty. So instead of making serious pots, I made...the Monster!

Yes, yes, I know, I'll get to work now. Have a wonderful weekend and happy gardening!
Did you know that there is a yellow-flowered variety of Babytoes? Maybe your Babytoes would like it if she got a yellow-flowered Babytoes friend:)
ReplyDeleteThat would be lovely, Aria! I'll be on the lookout.
DeleteI think you can find some seeds on the internet.
DeleteAlso, I found this cute time lapse of a yellow Babytoes blooming: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oKlUc2frUew
I hope it makes you happy to see it cheerfully blooming:)
Thank you, Aria, I'll take a look!
DeleteThat's a cute moster and even cuter Fenestraria! I'm always so envious of your ability to make it bloom. I can only manage to make my seedlings keep 3 pairs of leaves at a time and not die on me ;D
ReplyDeleteI don't have any special powers, Rika! I think that Fenestraria (and Frithia) likes it here on the beach because it is a very similar environment to where it evolved. Other mesembs that I grow, that evolved in a more desert/rocky environment, have a tougher time here on the beach.
DeleteYour beautiful blooming babytoes are the best! I just got a babytoes yesterday. This would be my second trial. Last time, I had overwatered and killed them..once a week was too much...:( Your monster pot is pretty funny. Thanks for the smiles!
ReplyDeleteYes, less water is better. I water mine about once every 10 days. Make sure when you water that it gets a good soak, as the soil can be dry and take some time to dampen and soak up the water. Sometimes I mist it in the mornings, just a little, because in its native environment, it's near the beach and gets a little sea mist.Glad you like the wee beastie! :-)
