Dahlia!

It bloomed!
Lots of water, extra fertilizer, and a sun shade when necessary made the difference. My first dahlias! What firsts are you trying this spring?

  1. Very pretty and a nice reminder for me of flowers to come. It has been a very long, very cold, and very wet and snowy winter. I am just preparing to start my seedlings. Unfortunately, I don't plan on dahlias but will have lots of zinnias, marigolds and sunflowers. I may try something new this year but have decided on what that will be. Is you soil primarily sand? Up here in Maryland our big soil problem is clay and soil that stays wet too long. We are not accustomed to soil that dries out too fast.
I like your treatment of the foliage. Not too bold but a nice background for the flower. Thanks for sharing.

  2. All my friends to the north are having a very slow start for their gardens this year, it was quite the winter up there! Your garden plans sound lovely. For something new, maybe strawberries? Or edible nasturtiums? I am growing nasturtiums here but they sure don't like the salty air...maybe you'd have better luck. The soil here is very sandy indeed. I augment with lots of compost, bunny droppings, and soil from a local farm. In some patches I add an acidifier.
