Pensive Tuesday: Calling In Sick

These past few weeks have been a real learning opportunity. What am I learning about? Influenza B! We're having a true epidemic here. I haven't been this sick for about 5 years. Yuck. And once the flu is over, there's this 2-week long thing called "Post Influenza Fatigue and Malaise".

I am fatigued and malaised.... I need to take more medicine.

Since my brain is operating on the level of a beached jellyfish, I only have practical, immediate thoughts for Pensive Tuesday. Like...who's going to take care of my 100+ plants until I can get out of bed?

Do you have a plantsitter? Do you have several?

3 Men and a Bunch of Lithops??? I called Tom Selleck, but he was sadly unavailable....

I really do need to get a couple of people trained to take care of these unusual plants. I make candy, so I will bribe them with it.

Mind you, Lithops and other mesembs, and Tillies, can do a Cam Idle and be left pretty much to themselves for at least a week or two. But sometimes, we get called away for longer periods. I really do need to train a couple of plantsitters.... What do you do for plant-sitting?

  1. So sorry to hear that you're sick. I hope you feel better soon.

One reason why I grow orchids is because they can go for 2 weeks without anything. If we go away, we have a couple of house-sitters who come in and take care of the plants as needed. I leave a very detailed schedule for them to follow. If they do, great, if they don't, the plants seem to survive anyway.

The only real mishap was when my mother was very sick and I had to be away for an extended period of time. Some of the plants got thrips, and the plant-sitter(s) didn't notice. That was bad.

    1. Ew, thrips, those are horrible! But I'm glad your orchids are tough. Orchids only have to look at me before they start to wilt or rot...I don't have the knack with them at all....

  2. Shame, good luck with the sniffles...I am potty-training (hehe) the neighbour, by giving her plants as presents to try and keep alive, so by the time I go away for more than 2 weeks, I will have her ready to go! LOL! ... on a side note, she will also become honorary Grandmother, which may come in handy in about 6 months time...

    Get well soon!

    1. "Potty-training"- I'll have to remember that one! ;-) And it's great to have a soon-to-be honorary grandma for a neighbor!

  3. I'm sorry to hear that you are sick, Marla. Get well soon!

These days I only have a few plants and they really don't need special care. I did have a small disaster once, though, when a pomegranate bonsai was somehow missed by the house sitter while I was on vacation. I had started that plant from seed and trained it for five years. It wasn't ancient or valuable but I was very sad to see it long past the PWP (permanent wilting point) when I returned from my vacation. There is nothing sadder to see than a deciduous bonsai with crispy leaves.

    1. A pomegranate bonsai, how marvellous! I'm sorry it expired so horribly...can you grow some more?

  4. Yes, I think I may try again, Marla. Pomegranates are really good candidates for bonsai because the leaves seem to miniaturize much faster than some other deciduous trees. Gail

    1. That's interesting, are the fruits miniature as well?

  5. Hope you feel better soon. No flue here (our flue shots are doing their thing), but a bad case of colds which became bronchitis.
As regards the plants, when we're gone for two or more weeks, we have our younger son (40) come over and water the seedlings and the more sensitive plants. But the adult succulents - and especially the Lithops - can go that long without any problem.
Best wishes for a quick recovery.
